Mise en scene
The very beginning of the opening 5 minutes start with the logo of New Line Cinema, and name of the production company, displaying their name at the very beginning. It then goes straight into the opening scene of William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) standing in his kitchen, the lighting is very dim with a red filter adding to the tension created, using a common feature of darkness to add to the thriller effects on the audience. All the lighting throughout the opening scene is extremely dark, there is no natural light let in as it is always covered by blinds and walls, if not it is filmed to be in the dark, the effect of this adds to the mood created by a thriller film, using dark and unnatural lighting to create tension and an uneasy mood for the audience.
