Evaluation- Luke Ogilvie

-
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

We have developed the convention of a thriller in this shot, we developed the convention of mystaries   , the way we developed this was to add afew more things that would enhance the themes, for example we used the picture at the same time, and as the picture is an optical illusion it gives the idea of what to expect in the film.
Another way we developed it was to use the scrabble type fonts, as in films you get the stalker who cuts out newspaper letters so they are to be anouimous, thats the idea we had.

The convention we stuck to here was the one of anonimity and identity, we have done what the phone booth didnt do and we tried to make sure that we made the main charicters idenity stay as a secret for as long as possible, this was to create the atmosphere of mystary and to keep the audience guessing  for as long as possible, also due to the stalk theme of the film, we wanted him not to be known.

We have developed the convention of technology in this shot,  we wanted to show him on the computer and using another form of commutation, and a another sources that cant be tracked. We deveopled the shot from death note, by taking him outside and somehow showing the audience we have removed him rom the confines of the world, and he is alone searching the net, and looking for people.
Using a laptop, not a computer, out in the open is developing it, because the usual thriller antagonist is very secluded, and is in his own little room, we have taken our antagonist out of the area, made him look normal and placed him in the public, but still with his means of keeping track of people, by using the internet on his laptop

Personally, i dont like this shot, i prefer the original shot, as i love that fact you are not able to see what is going on and what has been written, and the effect that it gives, i think the effect is something of a person with problems, like that have written so much, and in so much detail. It also looks neet and organised, which are tell tale signs of people with issues.
We used the large fonts, so everyone could see what has been said, which i do not feel is what is done in a thriller.
We have developed the convention of the idea of our stalker being abit phycotic, with the idea that he is very, detailed and neet, and very organised, what we did to make it abit different to make it so you can see the writing, just to give the audience a better understand of what the plot will be and whats happening

We challenged a convention in this shot, so instead of giving the idea that he is being watched, we wanted to give a POV from the stalkers view of what he was going, we wanted to do this for afew reasons, one being so you can see what he sees, so it puts you in his positions and makes you feel more involved. Also it shows you the writing on his hand, and it lets you know alot about him, but it still does not show you who this person is, so he retains his identity.

2. How does your media Product represent particular social groups?

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I feel or I would like to think that our product would have a wide appeal, but I do understand that the demand for such films like the opening we have produced is for a niche market.
The film I would like to compare ours to, in terms of appeal would be the Da vinci code, because it was filmed and produced in the idea it would not go mass market, as it is a thinker, but it appealed to a lot of people, so the viewing numbers were huge. I would like to open in art houses to start with, to get a general idea on what people thought of, but I would try to get a contact with a cinema rights for it to be shown for the first week of opening exclusively in there cinemas, to try and create and exclusivity about it, then try and release it to the mass market.

Due to the fact that our film is produced in England, and will hot a niche audience, we would want to work with a production company like channel 4, due to the fact i like the effect due they give when producing it, which gives it the Hand held, documentary feel, which due to the low budget of our film, thats the effect we would want to give, also with C4 it gives us the opportunity to work with the larger companies that they have worked with on films such as sumdog, they worked with fox. Also with it gives us platforms for showing, like channel 4, film4 and then there website.

The team of distributors and production companies I would want in our film would be companies like Skylark and Imagine, ones that have proven the ability to produce quality films, but then behind these company more of a advisory role a larger company like Columbia, which would have connections and would give our film the ability to go mass market if we wished to. Having these people in bored means that we wouldn't have to make cuts anywhere, we would have the specialist companies that would be the thinkers and give us the quality and then the big company with the money able to make that quality and turn it into quantity throughout the whole film.

WIKIspaces APOLLO QUESTION 3

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

The ideal viewer for our film would be a man in his late 30's/early 40's. He lives in a flat with his girlfriend and enjoys watching horror movies. In his spare time he loves to go out to eat fine food with his girlfriend, and he has a unhealthy obsession with detective TV programs, like CSI, and he is fascinated with the mind of stalkers, and mass murders and what makes them do what they do. In the past, he was never the normalist of people, he spend his childhood in lunchtime clubs and hung around with afew people that shared his interests of online games and other things of that sort. His dream in life is to get into the police and then work as a forensic officer. I feel this man would spend his money on fine food, his hobbies, like police series DVD box sets, trips to comic conventions and other things like this. This male is the person that put his religion as JEDI and truly believed that it was for real, and got excited about it, and thought he was super cool, and all his friends thought that aswell, but he girlfriend wasnt impressed, and this caused some issues at home, and therefore some problems in the bedroom, where he wasnt very good anyways, which then made there relationship even worse, and it soon ended with him and her breaking up. This man would live in the city, and would have probably only just moved out of his mums house, because they pretty much made him.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

When we were filming, we always made sure that we did not give to much away, this ensured that out audience would want to continue you watch and find out more about the people and the plot in our film. We made sure there was never much dialog, which created at atmosphere of suspense, which would make people want to watch on and keep them on the edge of there seats. The music we used was designed to create the atmosphere of suspense, due to the minor tones and the drowns used, also, we added in the ringing of a phone, which is a continuing theme throughout our film, this gives the idea that no one is picking it up, which therefore means that someone doesn't want to answer.
The editing we used also added effect and would have attached people to ut, due to the fade in and fades out we used, this made it smooth to watch and easy on the eyes for people to watch, this also then moved into the credits, which were not static like normal credits, we made them vibrate and pulse a little which gives the people something new, and also creates the idea that this is no normal film.
With the opening and credit order, we decided to leave the name of the film, so it is the last thing you see, this would keep people on the edge of the seats and would make them want to know what its called and it would suck them in, hopefully we have chosen a name which makes the effect we want.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Theere have been 3 aspects of filming and producing i have learnt about in media this year, they are filming, editing and the research and planning that not just goes into this, but into all sorts of films.

When i first started i didnt have a clue how to work a mac, as the mouse is different, and with learning how to use the mac, comes learning how to use the programs that come with it, this are things like, final cut, and garage band.

Final cut express was very hard to get used to, i say this, you could propably work it basicly very easily, as what you can do is just cut scene to scene, it would look rubbish, but you could still work it, what i found you had to do, to master it was to just get abit of film, and just go crazy with it, click on every button, and see what it does, and keep on going back and use it over and over again. When learning to use it, i did use tutorials, these were just youtube videos, which explained from the basics of final cut, to the most advanced things you can think of doing.

Example of a basic Tutorial

Example of an advanced Tutorial

Using the cameras wasnt really new to me, i think people people nowadays knows how to work a video camera. The things that i have learnt is how to use it, to is optimum proformance, learning how to use and change the settings without breaking it, or changing it into French.

We also learnt the importance of setting up the whole scene and everything that would be in the frame, and also doing practise shots, to make sure what we had in our heads would be captured by the cameras.

I learnt that research and planning was a HUGE thing, when planning to do our opening, i really didnt relise how effective it would be, and how much we we had to do int he first place.
We had to send out questionaires to see what people wanted to see, and then we had to evaluate it, this link was useful when creating survays which could be sent online, for people to do in 5 mins in the comfert of there own homes.

The importance of seeing what our audience wanted, by doing our market research, by doing our planning and research, is that we need to know waht to film, what people like to watch, so then we can change our film to suit the people that we want to watch it, as if we just did what we wanted to see, this could mean that no one would.

We hade to learn to use blogger, this is a blog were we were to put everything we do, and write about everything we thought and did. Due to the fact that i know quite alot about the internet, things were easy to pick up, the only problems we had were tagging and the forgetting to tag, and then going through everything to tag it
I also learnt how to use a prezi, this is a program you used to make a mind map and various other things. The first time i tried to use it, i couldnt for the life of me work out how to do it, it took me 3 hours to do what i wanted to do, and that wasnt a complicated.

I have deveopled my skills of uploading and learning how to move clips from video cameras to the macs, i was never very good at this before, but now i know all you need to do is, plug in, log and transfer... job done.
This yeah i have also learn various short cuts on the makes, like how to copy pictures quickly or how to move between windows and tabs quicker than normal, also due to outside help, i have learnt things so using final cut express is alot easier, and quicker.

We had to set up a Youtube account, this was not my first account, so i was able to do this with little difficulty, we needed to make a group one as we did not want anything to be linked back to us personally, we didnt want to be stalked by some weirdo. Although i had a account before this, i had never used it to upload and edit videos, so this was something i had to pick up, just by trying it. I can, now say that i have mastered it, and i will be confident to use it for my own little projects out of school.

Overall i am happy with my progress and understanding of the tech that i have been introduced to over the past year, i am confident i can now go off and do my own thing if i want to.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to do the full product

We have learned many more camera techniques and since we did a lot of planning and research we were able to film more sufficiently and we used a lot more camera angles than in our preliminary task. For example, we used an over-the-shoulder shot in our film to make it look more professional. We also used the Internet to help us, for example we used 'Dafont' to help us choose the font for our credits. We used IMDb so we could research genre and audience. At the beginning of our filming we had some problems with the camera, but we continued to film and we got used to working with the cameras very quickly. In our preliminary the video transitions didnt flow smoothly, and the content of the shot didnt match well, as you can see in our preliminary at 00:23 the shot where the man walks through the doorway, the next shot contains the door opening and him walking through. By having these two shots next to each other the film didnt make sense and it contradicted itself. In the filming we have done for our coursework we made sure that none of the shots contradicted each other, this is useful as it makes the film flow smoother and makes sense to the audience. Also for our preliminary we didnt use any music, this made the film look less professional and didnt create any tension, by involving music for our film the correct mood is created for the audience, and the plot of film can be further explained throughout the music. For our music we have the dial tones for a phone ringing, this implies that the character is calling someone without an answer, linking to a main theme of communications in the film.
